Statement on the Untimely Death of Maj. Gen. Paul Lokech – Bobi Wine writes

0

Paul Lokech was a senior military officer at the rank of Major General, in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, who was appointed Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Uganda Police Force on 16 December 2020.

Gen. Lokech was a gallant, courageous and fine soldier. A lot has been said about his bravely on the battle-field. His peers talk of how he commanded from the front, sometimes putting his life on the line. He had such a distinguished military career which many younger officers and men were eager to emulate.

Unfortunately, the Museveni regime has not only destroyed our nation, it has also distinguished itself in destroying careers and reputations of great men and women.

Eight months ago, Gen. Lokech, who many Ugandans did not know, was deployed as Deputy Inspector General of Police. This was shortly after the November bloodbath, where the military and police with reckless abandon murdered over one hundred innocent citizens.

Gen. Museveni, afraid to his skin of an impending election defeat, and well aware of the kind of rigging he was plotting to do, decided to deploy Gen. Paul Lokech to stop any attempt of the people of Uganda to rise up and reclaim their democratic rights. Shortly after, another former Commander of the Ugandan Contingent in Somalia, Maj. Gen. Kayanja Muhanga was deployed as overall head of operations in Kampala. Gen. Museveni boasted that he had deployed commandos from Somalia to neutralise the situation in Kampala.

Thousands of Ugandans were abducted, hundreds tortured and many others killed in cold blood. My campaign team was arrested in Kalangala and taken through hell, before they were taken to Kitalya for several months – to an extent that hundreds of them are still missing or under illegal detention. I was placed under house arrest and an array of grave human rights violations took place.

His last public assignment related to the arrest of persons suspected to have attacked Gen. Katumba Wamala recently. Several of the suspects were murdered during investigations. The images of the other suspects appearing before court with grave torture-marks are very fresh in our minds.

It is therefore very unfortunate that Gen. Lokech who by all accounts was a fine soldier had his good record spoiled by the regime just in the last eight months of his life. Gen. Museveni put him in direct confrontation with the citizens.

Obviously, I join many other Ugandans in raising questions about the manner of death of very many prominent persons these past few years.

To date, there are many deaths which have left more questions than answers and this is one of them. While we know that death is a fact of life, the pattern of deaths of prominent persons due to “blood clots” and “heart attacks” leaves many questions.

I therefore join with the elders and leaders of Acholi sub-region as well as other concerned citizens of Uganda in their demand for an independent investigation in the cause of this death. Even as we make this demand, we know that the regime never allows any such thing to happen.

Ultimately, most answers will come out when Museveni is long gone.

To all soldiers and police officers who are still alive, my appeal to you is that you learn a lesson about this tragedy.

The Scriptures tell us in Proverbs 22:1, that “A good name is to be chosen over great riches, and favor over silver and gold.” Before you make any decision to end another person’s life, or to cause extreme pain on any innocent citizen, always remember that we are all human beings, made of flesh and blood.

One day we shall all be gone and what will remain is the memory of the works we did. Work for that.

May his soul rest in peace.

Vitamin D proves ineffective in fight against COVID-19 – says study

0

A new study from studyfinds.org says that Vitamin D does not improve a person’s resistance to COVID-19, nor does it help the condition of those already infected.

People with high Vitamin D levels are shown to be just as susceptible to the coronavirus. A technique called Mendelian Randomization was used on a sample size of 1.3 million people from across the world to account for various genetic factors.

Individuals with Vitamin D deficiency were not included in the study, as such, supplements may be useful in treating those who truly lack it.

Dr. Butler-Laporte said “Vitamin D supplementation as a public health measure to improve outcomes is not supported by this study. Most importantly, our results suggest investment in other therapeutic or preventative avenues should be prioritized for COVID-19 randomized clinical trials.

Preview: Chelsea vs. Crystal Palace – prediction, team news, lineups

0

Fresh from winning the UEFA Super Cup, Chelsea will begin their 2021-22 Premier League campaign with a home match against Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues finished fourth in last season’s Premier League table, while Palace – now under the management of former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira – claimed 14th for the second successive campaign.

Match preview

Chelsea needed a penalty shootout to overcome Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night, as the two teams could not be separated at the end of 120 minutes; it was yet more European silverware for the Blues, who spectacularly beat Manchester City in last season’s Champions League final.

Thomas Tuchel has made a huge impression at Stamford Bridge since his arrival, but there is no question that the London club need to show improvement in the Premier League this term, as they only just finished fourth last term, some 19 points behind the champions Man City.

At the time of writing, Marcus Bettinelli is Chelsea’s only arrival this summer, but the club are on the verge of signing Romelu Lukaku, with the Inter Milan striker set to return to Stamford Bridge in a £97.5m deal.

The Blues played three pre-season friendlies over the summer, beating Bournemouth and Arsenal, in addition to drawing with Tottenham Hotspur, and Saturday’s clash with Palace is even more important than it might have been considering that Tuchel’s side have a tough start to the campaign.

Indeed, the European Cup winners will visit Arsenal and Liverpool in their two games after the clash with Palace, while a tough September sees them face Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Man City.

Team News

Chelsea will definitely be without the services of Hakim Ziyech, who suffered a shoulder injury during the UEFA Super Cup with Villarreal on Wednesday night.

JorginhoMason MountAndreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta all appeared off the bench against the Yellow Submarine, and it would not be a surprise to see all four players come into the XI this weekend.

Marcos Alonso could ultimately get the nod as the left-sided wing-back due to Ben Chilwell‘s lack of action since the end of last season, while Reece James might also start on the bench, with Callum Hudson-Odoi operating on the right.

Further forward, Timo Werner and Mount could be joined by Kai Havertz, with Lukaku potentially on the bench if the Belgium international’s move from Inter is confirmed on time.

As for Palace, new signing Olise is unlikely to be available due to a back problem, while Eberechi Eze is definitely out, as the midfielder works his way back from a serious Achilles injury.

Nathan Ferguson is also out with an Achilles rupture, while Vieira will need to assess the fitness of a number of players before naming his starting XI this weekend.

Wilfried Zaha is a certainty to start in the final third of the field, while there could be a debut for Guehi against his former club, but Gallagher is ineligible to play against his parent side, having arrived on loan from Tuchel’s side this summer.

Chelsea possible starting lineup:
Mendy; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger; Hudson-Odoi, Kante, Jorginho, Alonso; Mount, Werner, Havertz

Crystal Palace possible starting lineup:
Guaita; Ward, Kouyate, Guehi, Mitchell; McArthur, Riedewald, Schlupp; Zaha, Mateta, Ayew

Chelsea 2-0 Crystal Palace

Chelsea cannot afford to drop points on the opening weekend when taking into account their difficult start to the season, and we are expecting the Blues to triumph on Saturday. Palace have shown plenty of positive signs during pre-season but should come up just short against the European Cup winners.

Preview: Manchester United vs. Leeds United – prediction, team news, lineups

0

Manchester United will begin their 2021-22 Premier League campaign with a home fixture against Marcelo Bielsa‘s Leeds United on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils finished second behind Manchester City in last season’s table, while Leeds impressed on their return to the top flight, picking up 59 points from 38 matches to claim ninth.

Match preview

Man United will be expected to challenge for this season’s Premier League title, with the club again making progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last term, claiming second spot, 12 points behind the champions Man City.

Statement signings in the shape of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane have arrived, and the Red Devils will be looking to put down a marker in the early stages of the campaign. Indeed, the 20-time English champions will not face a genuine top-four rival in the league until they travel to Leicester City in the middle of October.

There are no easy games at this level of football, but Solskjaer will be expecting his side to pick up some serious points in the opening weeks and that will surely have to be the case if they are to genuinely challenge Man City for the title, with the Citizens likely to be the team to beat once again.

The team’s pre-season has been interrupted by late returns from international duty and coronavirus issues, but they managed to play four friendlies and put in a strong performance against Everton last Saturday, as Mason GreenwoodHarry MaguireBruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot scored in a 4-0 win.

Man United finished last season without any silverware, but they made the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, semi-finals of the EFL Cup and final of the Europa League, and Solskjaer will be desperate to take the final step in 2021-22, with the Norwegian certainly being backed in the transfer market this summer.

Leeds, meanwhile, finished ninth in the Premier League last season on their return to the top flight, and it would be fair to say that they provided plenty of entertainment along the way.

The Whites finished just two points behind eighth-place Arsenal and three points behind seventh-place Tottenham Hotspur, who secured a spot in the Europa Conference League; Bielsa’s side were only six points off the Europa League positions, meanwhile, which is so impressive for a promoted team.

Manchester United possible starting lineup:
De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Matic, Fred; Pogba, Fernandes, Greenwood; Martial

Leeds United possible starting lineup:
Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Cooper, Firpo; Raphinha, Dallas, Rodrigo, Phillips, Harrison; Bamford

We say: Manchester United 2-1 Leeds United

This is a very, very tough match for Man United, who will be missing a number of important players. Last season, the Red Devils won this fixture 6-2, as Leeds left too many gaps in defensive areas. On this occasion, we are not expecting a high-scoring contest but are just backing Man United to get the job done, with Sancho potentially coming off the bench to make the difference for the 20-time English champions.

COVID-19 Reinfections Among Unvaccinated Twice as Likely Than Among Vaccinated

Those who have recovered from COVID-19 who have not been vaccinated might have more than double the chance of reinfection than those who have been inoculated, according to a new study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study looked at hundreds of Kentucky residents who were infected with the coronavirus in 2020 and compared the vaccination status of those who were re-infected from May to June 2021. Researchers found that those who were not vaccinated had 2.34 times the odds of reinfection compared with those who were fully vaccinated.

Study authors concluded that “to reduce their likelihood for future infection, all eligible persons should be offered COVID-19 vaccine, even those with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection.”

Researchers also noted that “the emergence of new variants might affect the duration of infection-acquired immunity.”
