How To Apply for Tax Identification Number (TIN) Online in Ghana

The government of Ghana has officially directed every Ghanaian who is required to pay tax, or could be paying tax in the near future, must get their own Tax Identification Number (TIN) to enable smooth transactions and certain institutional registrations.

Tax Identification Number (TIN) as many do not know is a unique identification number issued to taxpayers for official transactions to be carried out.

In Ghana, apart from payment of taxes, Tax Identification Number is also used for other services such as registration of business, land and importation of goods into the country. This particular number is required for official transactions with the public institutions listed below.

  1. Domestic Tax Revenue Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority
  2. The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
  3. The Registrar General’s Department
  4. The Controller and Accountant General’s Department
  5. All District Assemblies
  6. Any other public institution which the Minister may by legislative instrument prescribe.

Who is Eligible to apply for a Tax Identification in Ghana

According to https://www.gra.gov.gh (G.R.A), the people listed below are required to register for a Tax Identification Number.

  1. Any individual who earns taxable income in Ghana.
  2. Any individual who wants to clear good in commercial quantities from any port or factory.
  3. Anyone who wants to register a title or other documentation relating to land.
  4. Requiring a Tax Clearance Certificate
  5. Wants to register a business or company at the Registrar General’s Department.
  6. Requiring a permit from any District Assembly.
  7. Anyone who wishes to receive a payment from Controller and Accountant General’s Department.

  2. Registering your vehicle
  3. Opening a bank account
  4. Getting a passport
  5. Buying land or registering title to a land
  6. Collection of goods and services

What you need in order to apply for your Tax Identification Number Online in Ghana. (Requirements)

  1. Your First Name
  2. Your Last Name
  3. Any accessible or valid email address
  4. A scanned colour copy of an identity document (pdf, jpeg, jpg, gif which should not be more than 1mb in size) needed for verification. Eligible ID’s for online registration includes; Voters ID, Driving Licence, National Identification Card (Ghana Card)

Please note; you are supposed to apply with valid documents, all expired ID’s will not be accepted.

How to apply for Tax Identification Number (TIN) Online

Getting started with your application:

Part 1 (Create a temporary login detail)

  1. Visit the Ghana Revenue Authority registration portal by clicking https://www.gra.gov.gh Create an online portal account to begin the process. You will receive a confirmation email with a link to complete your online portal account registration and proceed to the TIN registration page.

  • Input in your basic details and choose a password
  • Click the “add” button to attach your Identity Document (It should be a good quality, colour scanned copy of the above identity card in accepted format such as pdf, jpeg, gif).
  • After adding, click on upload to submit your document
Tin registration stage one
  • Click on register on the same page
  • Wait for your request to be submitted
  • Once your details have been validated, you will receive a success message indicating the acceptance of your information provided.
  • Kindly wait for a system generated email; this email will include a link to follow up in order to continue your TIN registration.
  • Follow the link provided in the email received or copy the link and paste in your browser
  • Input your email and password (Please note that these must be the same credentials that were registered earlier)
  • Click on the register button to continue to the next page
  • You will move on to the TIN Registration Details Page.

Tin Registration Stage Two
  • Fill in all the required information
  • After you have provided all the above information, click on submit.
  • You will receive a success message in the image below.

Note: in case you have used the National Identification Card then your TIN registration would be automatic and you will receive an email confirmation within some minutes or hours. All other types of card used will require a Ghana Revenue Authority Officer to scrutinize your documents before a TIN will be issued.

In all cases, the hard copy of your TIN certificate must be picked up from a nearest Ghana Revenue Authority Office.
